RE: I-10 west bound

We traveled that yesterday, turned north off I 10 at exit 59 to go to Kinder. avoided the mess and then took 190 west and hwy 12 to Vidor.
How rough is the 190/12 route these days? I'll have to take that route on the way back to Texas, as I'll be heading south on 171 from the Leesville area.
Luke
If you are leaving Leesville headed to Texas take 171 to 190 to the Texas state line where you pick up 12 east of VIDOR. If you are headed east towards Slidell, take I-10 east.
If you want to go to Kinder from the east, take 64. The only reason for taking this route would be to go to the casino. That route adds about 50 miles instead of taking 10. When I head east, I take exit 44 south to 90 to the 210 loop. I haven't been that way (west) in 4-5 weeks but I suspect part of the new west bound is now open.

RE: I-10 west bound

My reference to the nasty dip location is on the west side of Lake Charles. On the south side of the highway, head east is a big solid waste dump. Can't miss it as it is a huge mount. Name escapes me but it is one of the national companies. Just east of there is that dip.

RE: I-10 west bound

Rough and construction east of Lake Charles for about 10 miles. I will not take my 5er on that section.. Headed west, take Exit 44, left to hwy 165 south to hwy 90 and take the 210 loop.
Newly surfaced headed east. Possible that some of the west bound is open as I have not been that way in 4 weeks.
Hi Charlie,
So, the East bound side is now smooth all the way from Lake Charles to the US165 exit? We'll be heading to the Alexandria area from Texas in a few weeks and normally take Vidor LA12/US190 to Kinder in the past...But that was getting rough on the last trip...
Thanks,
Luke
Yes, portion of new east bound is complete and you are diverted to it while they repair the rest. There is a nasty dip headed east and west just before you get to the 210 loop. If you are headed east, slow down about 1/2 mile before the 210 loop exit. It is just east of the overpass that they have been working on and before you make the big left hand curve.

RE: unhitching problems

Lots of good info. Again though, I have to ask about the trailer parking brake. Is it ok to just pull the cable out of the E-brake to set the parking brake on the trailer.
If you are asking about pulling the cable for the emergency brakes for the camper, then the answer is no. Long term energizing of the brakes on the trailer by pulling the emergency cable with run you trailer battery down and eventually burn up the emergency controller.
Also remember, some manufacturers of brake controllers mounted in your truck say not to energize the emergency controller with the vehicle controller hooked up. It may damage it.

RE: good year trailer tires.

NHguy, I have also read Jims statement. Both of you make since but I am still having trouble understanding how to balance a stell wheel-my spare. When I had the tire mounted on the steel rim the first time, I asked to have it lug centered and ended up with less than 2 oz. of weights. When I had a new tire mounted on this same rim, I had almost 8 oz. of weights and was not lug centered.. It would seem to me that 8 oz. is excessive on a new tire. When I took this tire back, they lug centered the rim and installed 2 0z. of weights.
How do I tell what the best way to balance and if it was balanced properly? They won't let you in the back of the tire store and I don't know if my tire is balanced properly.
What should I do and ask for?

RE: Water Pressure Regulator

yes that surprises me also, something that is straight through and still stops working, like it had an on/off valve. you can look right through some of the cheaper regulators. they regulate by narrowing down the water passage
If you can see through them, they are not regulating pressure, only volume.

RE: No Perfect Trailer Tires out there

you could always give the titan E Range on the 15 rims a try.
they are working for me. :C
I have been all over Titan's web site. Do they make a 225/75-15" LR D tire rated at 2540#? That is what f350 will need for his trailer as a minimum.

RE: Tire Replacement Dilemma

I tried to buy 4 225/75R15 from NTB here in Wilmington. Wanted made in Mexico. Guy said they didn't have any and would be 10--14 days from warehouse and could not do better..I can't wait-heading back home on Monday.
Sounds like your dealer is going all out to sell you tires. Maybe NTB in Wilmington could take a lesson.

RE: PSA Test Help

Joe, If your friend has not checked the VA web site or Googled Agent Orange, have him do so.
I assume he is on VA disability, if not he should be. The VA does not sign you up for disability but they do have a "patient advocate" whom I found to be useless.
Texas and Louisiana have state supported offices where you go and they will handle all the paper work and filing. They are the one's that will get things rolling. Takes about 1 year from filing to receiving diasabilty but it is retroactive to the day you file,
Maybe he already knows this and is receiving disability but it was a steep learning curve for me and I got bounced from one employee to another before I found out about the state rep.
Good luck to your friend and tell him I said "Thank you for your service and welcome home Brother."

RE: No Credit/Debit Cards=No Business

My GM card gives 5% on all purchases good toward new cars I have gotten $11,000 refund so far
Shell has 5% on gas only at Shell Stations 1% on diesel.
ED
I got one of them. I have the old, original type. Credits me up to 5% on ALL purchases for a max of $500/year based on anniversary date. So far, saved $7,600 on new vehicles. Pay every thing on this card. Gotta pay it off every month or the interest rate gets you.

RE: Please let this be normal and not my new rig.

I was at a campground a few weeks ago and they were installing 50 amp receptacles. Using the same wiring that the 30 amp was on.
Also check the condition of the receptacle. Stayed in a state park a couple of months ago. When unplugging, the end on my plug had gotten hot and melted the plug. The campground also had 50 amp. I usually check, but forgot this time, to see what the condition of the receptacles and use the best one. Many 30 amps are in bad shape and do not deliver the voltage they should.
Cost me a new 30 amp plug.

RE: $16000 off on new f-250

If he is offering wholesale, sounds like a good deal. If you buy, make sure the final offer for yours is not "loan value." I have seen a lot of that going on.

RE: Is this a good deal?

Lot's of good info. here but forget about the trade-in price. I have dealt with many dealers and when pricing out what they will give me, they always try to use "loan value" when giving me a price for mine. I suspect that is what they offered the previous owner.
I always start with lot's of research and determine what I consider a fair price. Their choice to accept. If not, I walk.
As other's said, they play the numbers so be careful. Turning hawk has some good suggestions.

RE: Howard RV

I understand about your warranty, but how did you have to pay taxes again? You always have to pay them when you apply for the title. The dealer never actually pays them. You can get it rolled into your loan, but you are written the check at the time of the loan where you then pay them.
That's NOT the way it is done in Texas or Louisiana. Taxes, title, license are included in the paperwork. You either pay the dealer or it is rolled into the financing. Dealer then pay's the state and local govts' their cut of the sales tax. No checks are written back to the buyer.

RE: good year trailer tires.

Good move but they don't have the load carrying capacity that I need.
Took my Denman spare back to Tire Kingdom yesterday and told them I did not like the 7+ ounces of weight. They assured me that they lug centered balanced the tire. I had them check again. It was not lug centered balanced. Tire was rebalanced again and weight is now 2 ounce. Same as when the Marathon was on it.
There are several posters on here that say to have them lug centered balanced and I have in the past but did not request it this time.
trailer wheels are lug centered BUT the lugs are not concentric with the wheels mounting flange. Thats why tire shops that have been around the trailer industry awhile simple don't recommend balancing a trailer tire unless the customer insists. Balance a steel trailer wheel/tire assembly and then rotate 45/90 or 180 degrees and mount it back on the trailer hub and it will more than likely still be unbalanced. Well made aluminum trailer wheel tire mounting flange may be concentric to the lugs. Automotive wheels are center hole located to a machined flange on a axle and can be balanced for any position on the hub.
Jim
So you are saying not to balance steel wheels-which is my spare?
I have always felt that you make knowledgeable, sensible and experienced posts and have learned a lot from you. I suspect that we will now see a lot of opposing views? My reply is not intended to be a negative comment on your post and will shortly P.M. you on recommendations on replacement tires for my 2006 D/A crew cab..:C

RE: PSA Test Help

Thanks Emzee-This tragedy goes back to all the wars we have fought.
Have your DH do both a PSA and DRE ASAP. My surgeon placed his finger in my sons (age 34) face and told him to get both now. It is generally understood that all male children of parents who have had prostate cancer begin at age 40 instead of the generally accepted age of 50.

RE: PSA Test Help

According to a buddy of mine here, most of the Agent Orange vets never reached their 50th birthday. That's what he was told by VA doctors at the VA in Dallas. He has had surgery to remove cancerous lympth nodes in both his shoulders below his neck line. He served three tours in Nam as a Marine on-the-ground. He's one tough Hispanic American Marine from El Paso, TX. in his mid-60s now. He was given $225,000.00 dollars as settlement from the government, but he had to apply for it.
IF the doctors told him that, they have no medical basis for that statement. There are no confirmed links of illnesses to Agent Orange. There is a "presumptive" link to Type 2 diabetes and prostate cancer. There is also a presumptive link to a childhood birth defect. Hypertension is currently being reviewed as a "presumptive" link and may be added in the future. There are also many other suspected links but none confirmed.
Many of us Viet Nam vet's have medical problems and much is attributed to service there. There were actually many other Agents used in additional to Agent Orange, all were given a color designation.
I am not aware of any government settlements but that is not to mean that it did not happen. Many of the chemical companies that made the defolients were sued and some settlements were made but not in the massive amounts of dollars that you sometimes see. Most companies were "held harmless" because of government contracts and mandates to provide the chemicals.
Regardless, many of our soldiers have suffered emotional and physical problems as a result of Viet Nam. I was there in 1969 and we lost 7 men from our unit. I could not remember any of it until a company reunion in 2001. I have stayed in contact with several who have physical and mental problems.
I had a cancerous prostate removed in May of this year and a suspected cancerous lump in my breast last year. It proved to be benign. My doctors can not understand why I need 2 medications for hypertension since I retired 3 years ago at age 57. I began taking those medications 5 years ago after annual physicals for 27 years consistently showed my blood pressure at 117/70. I am almost always the most calm, laid back and happiest person you would meet since I retired from a high stress job. I am unable to watch the news as related to Iraq and Afghanistan. It is too painful to see the families that are affected and damage to our young men and women's bodies and mind.
Anyone one can go to the VA's website and look up Agent Orange or Google it.
Sorry for the long post and I hope that I have not written anything that will get deleted or this post closed.
